Abstract: Composite foams, having a closed, compact outer skin of polyurethane integral foam on >=1 side of surface, consist of a polyurethane integral foam, (A), and of a non-polyurethane foam (B). The composite foams are prepd. by (i) introducing the foamable polyurethane integral foam mixt., in flowable condition, into a sealable mould, in quantities such that compression ratio achieved on foaming is 1.5-3, (ii) the non-polyurethane foam is laid so as to float on the still flowable polyurethane integral foam mixt.; (iii) the mould is closed and (iv) the polyurethane integral foam mixt. is left to foam. The outer skin of (A) has high tensile- and flexural strength. Properties such as bulk wt., compressive stress and combustibility, are determined by (B). Composite foam, contg. polyethylene foam as (B) and soft, elastic (A) are used as sports mats (claimed) and opt. as wall claddings for gymnasia. Polystyrene and rigid (A) foams can be used as wood substitutes, partitions and furniture parts. Rigid (A) and foamed phenoplast or aminoplast as (B), opt. with inorganic-, e.g. silicate-, foams, are used as building components requiring good heat-insulation and non-flammability.

Abstract: Foamed articles are made as in the parent patent by heating and compressing crosslinked part-contg. olefin polymer particles foamed with light volatile organic blowing agents. The foamed particles used have wt./vol., measured in g/l, 10-500% higher than that of the initial foam particles. In this addn. the foam particles having a higher wt./vol. are produced by treating foam particles having a lower wt./vol. with steam at 80-130 degrees C, and cooling. In steaming, air is displaced from foam particles and replaced by steam. On cooling, steam condenses and the particles shrink with increase of bulk wt., e.e. from 10-20- to 20-100 g/l. The heavier foamed articles have increased strength after loading.
