    Abstract: The invention relates to expandable olefin bead polymers which comprise a blowing agent with a boiling point of from -5 to 150° C., selected from the group consisting of alkanes, alkanols, ketones, ethers and esters. The particles are unfoamed and have a bulk density above 500 g/l, and can be foamed to a bulk density below 200 g/l after storage for one hour at room temperature in free contact with the atmosphere. They are prepared by impregnating polyolefin pellets in suspension in a pressure vessel with the blowing agent, cooling the batch below 100° C., reducing the pressure and isolating the particles.

    Abstract: Polyisobutene is prepared by cationic polymerization of isobutene and/or isobutene-containing hydrocarbons in the liquid phase in the presence of a complex of BF3 and at least one cocatalyst which is preferably chosen from oxygen-containing compounds, the BF3/cocatalyst complex being produced in situ by adding BF3 and cocatalyst to a reaction stream, wherein BF3 and oxygen-containing cocatalyst are added to the reaction stream via a common binary nozzle comprising an outlet for BF3 and an outlet for the oxygen-containing cocatalyst. The invention also describes a binary nozzle having a centrally arranged outlet for the catalyst.

Apparatus for producing crimped yarn comprises a heating zone and a yarn guide which produces undulations in the yarn transversely to the direction of movement of the yarn, and is characterised by a casing 11 having parallel ribs formed with coaxially running openings 12 for guiding the yarn, and by a yarn guide 14 capable of oscillatory movement perpendicular to the direction of yarn movement and which has one or more limbs located in the gaps between the ribs and provided with coaxially running openings 15 for guiding the yarn. The yarn, which may be monofilaments, fibre bundles, bristles or ribbons, is preferably thermoplastics material and is heated to at least 100‹C below the crystalline melting point of the material. The casing 11 is enclosed in a heating chamber.

    Abstract: Leather is simultaneously dyed and finished using a coloured polymer in which the dye is bound to the polymer by a covalent bond. The polymer may be obtained by copolymerizing a dye bearing at least one polymerizable olefinically unsaturated group with one or more polymerizable monomers (many listed) or the polymer may be one on to which a copolymerizable dye has been grafted or the polymer may be attached to the dye by way of reactive groups both on the polymer and the dye. The polymers may be in solution or dispersion, preferably aqueous dispersion. The coloured polymers may contain reactive groups, e.g. by using N-methylolacryl- or methacrylamide as a comonomer, through which cross-linking may be effected. The coloured polymers may be applied by brushing, dipping or spraying or in a drum. The so-treated leather may afterwards be glazed or plated. Examples are given. Specifications 877,402, 914,282, 946,472, 964,757 and 965,627 are referred to.
