    Abstract: The invention provides disazo-imidazole dyes which are represented by the formulae in which A is a phenyl radical or a naphthyl radical which may bear as substituents halogen atoms, nitro, acylamino, carboxylic acid, cyano sulphone and/or sulphonamide groups, B is a phenylene or naphthylene radical which may bear as substituents halogen atoms, alkyl, acylamino and/or hydroxyl groups, A being a diazo component radical, B being a radical of a further diazotizable coupling component, A and B being free from unsubstituted or alkylsubstituted amino groups, R is an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, R1 is a hydrogen atom or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, R2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, X and Y are hydrogen atoms or alkyl or aryl radicals and may be connected to form a hydroaromatic ring, Z is an anion of a simple or complex inorganic or organic acid, n is 1-4 and the group or groups RO are attached to A and/or B. The dyes are prepared by coupling the diazo compound of an amine of formula (II) (RO)n-(A-N=N-B)NH2 in which A, B, R and n are as above with imidazole or a derivative thereof bearing substituents as defined in the 4 and/or 5 position followed by an optional alkylating treatment or by treating with mineral acids in which case R1 is hydrogen. Several alkylation reagents are specified. Various colourless anions may be introduced by double decomposition of the alkylation products with simple or complex inorganic or organic acids. The dyes give brown shades on polyacrylnitrile and polyester materials.
