Abstract: Carbonates are prepared by reacting carbamic acid esters with alcohols at above 140 DEG C., the ammonia formed being stripped from the reaction mixture during the reaction by passing an inert gas or vapor therethrough. The carbonates obtainable by the process of the invention are valuable starting materials for the preparation of dyes, crop protection agents and plastics.

Abstract: The immediate stoppage of a polyoxalkylation reaction in presence of a basic catalyst is effected by adding to the reaction mixt. (a) an alkylating agent, (b) a carboxylic acid halide, (c) a sulphonic acid halide, (d) a halogen deriv of methane and/or (e) a low mol.wt. organic cpd. contg. active halogen atoms. The blocking agents (one or more) are used to stop the polyaddn. of alkylene oxides (e.g. ethylene oxide) to low mol.wt. cpds. contg. active hydrogen (e.g. water, NH4OH, amines etc.) in presence of basic catalysts (e.g. Na methylate, KOH). Because of their rapid reaction, they prevent pollution of the atmosphere or possible explosion of the polymerisation vessel should the process get out of hand because of, e.g. too high a polymerisation temp. or pressure or too high an alkylene oxide content.

Abstract: A process for the production of mixtures of diphenylmethane diisocyanates and polyphenyl polymethylene polyisocyanates comprising the steps of A. reacting aniline and an O-alkyl carbamate to form N-phenylurethanes; B. isolating the N-phenylurethanes; C. condensing, in the presence of an acid, the N-phenylurethanes with formaldehyde or bifunctional compounds having the formula X-CH2-X in which X stands for a RO-, RS- or ROCO radical and R denotes an alkyl radical, to form mixtures of methylene bis(phenylurethanes) and polymethylene polyphenylurethanes; D. cleaving the mixtures of methylene bis(phenylurethanes) and polymethylene polyphenylurethanes at temperatures of 175 DEG C. to 600 DEG C.; and E. isolating the mixtures of diphenylmethane diisocyanates and polyphenyl polymethylene polyisocyanate resulting from step D.

Abstract: Prodn. of aromatic mono and/or polyurethanes (I) comprises reacting O-alkyl carbamates (II) with prim. aromatic mono and/or polyamines (III) in presence of alcohols (IV) and opt. urea at high temp., and opt. separating the NH3 formed.: Pref. the ratio NH2 gps. in (III) : (II) : (IV) is 1:0.5-20 : 1-100 and the opt. urea is =1:1 with respect to (IV), esp. is not >1.5 equiv. urea based on NH2 gps. in (III). Reaction is esp. at >160 degrees C and 0.1-120 bar with NH3 removed as it is produced. (I) are useful (a) as intermediates e.g. for polycondensation and polymer systems, and esp. for corresp. isocyanates, or (b) as pesticides. Single stage process gives good yields without the need for toxic starting materials and without forming toxic by-prods. Formation of polyureas and thermal decomposition prods. does not occur.
