Abstract: Purification of ethylbenzene (I) prepd. by reacting benzene and ethylene in presence of an AlCl3 catalyst, comprises first phase sepn. of most of the heavier organic Al cpds. from lighter crude (I). This is then treated with steam using an amt. at least equiv. to the amt. of residual organic Al cpd. The resulting Al-contg. ppte. is separated and the Al-free (I) distilled conventionally. Opt. the crude (I) is treated with NH3 before steam treatment and esp. enough superheated steam is used so that directly after treatment traces of water (but 500ppm) are present in (I). (I) is used to make styrene. Treatment with steam gives a ppte which is easily sedimented (contrast use of NH3 alone which gives a voluminous ppte) and there is no need for water-washing of crude (I), so no polluting waste streams are generated.

Abstract: A process for the continuous preparation of ethylbenzene in a heterogeneous-phase reaction by alkylating benzene with ethylene in the presence of a catalyst based on a complex organic aluminum chloride compound and a co-catalyst at an elevated temperature and elevated pressure, with a residence time of from 5 to 60 minutes in one or more reaction zones, the reaction mixture, after completion of the reaction, being fed into a pressure vessel and vigorously mixed therein for from 20 to 60 minutes at from 120 DEG to 160 DEG C.
