Abstract: Alkyl-di- and poly-ether sulphates of formula R -O-CH2-CHR O-CHR -CHR n-OSO3M (I), and alkyl-di- and poly-ether alcohols of formula R -O-CH2-CHR O-CHR -CHR n-OH (II) and their mixtures are new; in which R = 4-16C alkyl; R = 2-18C alkyl; in each -O-CHR -CHR unit, R , R = H or one of R and R = H and the other = CH3; M = H, a monovalent metal ion or a (hydroxy)alkylammonium ion of formula R NH3; R = 1-12C (hydroxy)alkyl; and on average, n = 1-20. Also claimed are (a) mixtures containing (I) and/or (II) and an alkoxyalkyl sulphate (III); (b) aqueous baths for treating hydrophobic capillary materials, especially textile fibre materials, containing 0.01-2 wt.% (I) and/or (III); and (c) laundry detergents containing 1-20 wt.% (I) or mixture of (I) and (III).
