Abstract: A catalyst including V2O5, Na2S2O7\t and K2S2O7 on a carrier having special physical properties e.g. SiO2 is used as a fluidised bed in the oxidation of naphthalene or o-xylene to phthalic anhydride. Examples describe the formation also of maleic anhydride and naphthaquinone as by-products. The reaction is carried out at 250-420 DEG C.ALSO:In a process for the production of phthalic anhydride from o-xylene or from naphthalene by oxidation with gases containing oxygen in molecular form, at a temperature of 250 DEG C.-420 DEG C. by the use of V2O5-alkali pyrosulphate catalysts on carrier material in a fluidized bed there is used a catalyst which comprises V2 O5, Na2 S2 O7 and K2 S2 O7, the melting point of the mixture being lower than that of K2 S2 O7, and a highly porous carrier material, especially silica gel, aluminium phosphate, synthetic or natural silicates and active carbon, having an inner surface of 200-400 sq. metres/gm. and a grain size of 10-3000 microns, the active substance being contained in the pores of the carrier in fused form under the reaction conditions. Optional catalyst constituents include H2 MoO4, P2 O5 and H2 Wo4. Examples are given.

Abstract: In an improvement in the process of the parent Specification for the thermal oxidative degradation and simultaneous purification of linear polyolefins prepared by polymerization of olefins containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms with catalysts containing heavy metals of Group IVa, Va or VIa of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table and which contain small amounts of these catalysts, which comprises dissolving the polyolefin in an inert organic solvent and heating the solution in the presence of oxygen or oxygen supplying compounds for 15 to 200 minutes at 70 DEG to 240 DEG C., the solution of the polyolefin is prepared from a suspension of the polyolefin in the solvent by leading in superheated steam. The superheated steam may be under a pressure of 5 to 100 atmospheres, and basic compounds such as ammonia or alkylamines, air or oxygen may be metered into the steam. In an example a solution of polypropylene is prepared from a suspension thereof in heptane by leading in steam at 14 atmospheres into which ammonia and air have been metered.

Abstract: CO2 is removed from gases under pressure by washing the gases first with an aqueous solution of a trialkenolamine of pH 8-10 at 50-80 DEG C., and then with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of an amino acid, of pH 10-12, at 20-50 DEG C. The alkanolamine may be triethanolamine, of 25-45% concentration, and is regenerated by multi-stage flashing to atmospheric pressure, the gas from the first flashing being recompressed and recycled to the scrubbing tower. The alkali metal salt may be potassium N-methyl-a -aminopropionate, of 25-50% concentration, and is regenerated by flashing to atmospheric pressure and then stripping with steam, with heat-exchange between the solutions before and after stripping. The mixture of CO2 and steam produced is used to heat directly the alkanolamine solution after final flashing. The initial gases may be at 5-300 atm. pressure, with a minimum partial pressure of CO2 of 1.5 atm.ALSO:CO2 is removed from gases under pressure by washing the gases with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of an amino acid, of pH 10 - 12, at 20-50 DEG C. The gas are first given a coarse washing with an aqueous solution of a trialkanolamine, of pH 8-10, at 50-8 DEG C. The salt may be potassium N-methyl-a -aminopropionate of 25-50% concentration, and is regenerated by flashing to atmospheric pressure and then stripping with steam, with heat exchange between the solutions before and after stripping.
