Abstract: An alkali-soluble condensation product is prepared by reacting together in an acid aqueous medium (a) 1 to 5 molar equivalents of an aromatic hydroxy compound which is free from carboxyl groups (b) 0.1 to 0.5 molar equivalents of a lower alkyl (C1-C6) ether of dimethyolurea or a dimethyol compound of an aliphatic linear or cyclic urea derivative (c) 1 to 6 molar equivalents of an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid, an aliphatic dicarboxylic or hydroxy-dicarboxylic acid or an aryloxy fatty acid and (d) 5 to 11 molar equivalents of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor. The reaction is preferably carried out at 30 DEG C. to the boiling point of the composition. Many monohydric and polyhydric phenols are specified including monohydroxy and polyhydroxy compounds of diarylsulphones. Suitable compounds (b) are the dimethyl ether of dimethyolurea, dimethylolmethyl urea, dimethyol-N,N1-dimethylurea, dimethylolethyleneurea, dimethylolpropyleneurea, (di - N,N1 - methylol) 1 - 2 - ureylene-ethylene glycol and bis-(1,2-ureylene) ethanedimethylolate. Salicylic, gallic, malonic, malic, glutaric and phenoxyacetic acids are the specified acids (c) and the formaldehyde may be in the free form or in the form of formaldehyde donors such as 1,3,5-trioxane, paraformaldehyde and hexamethylenetetramine. The condensation product is prepared by first reacting the aromatic hydroxy compound with formaldehyde and then reacting this product with the acid and urea derivative or by reacting the components (a) to (d) together. The products are useful as laking agents for basic dyes. A flexographic printing ink is prepared by dissolving a copolymer of styrene and diethyl maleate in a mixture of ethanol and ethylene glycol to which is then added a basic dye such as Rhodamine B and a resin product prepared as above which is the reaction product of (1) p-tertiary - butylphenol, formaldehyde salicylic acid and dimethylolurea dimethyl ether (2) as (1) but using malic acid instead of salicylic acid and (3) as (1) but using 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone instead of p-tertiary butyl phenol. Other dyes such as Rhodamine BA, auramine benzene sulphonate, Victoria Blue B and malachite green may also be used.

Abstract: A colour lake consists essentially of a basic dye and an alkali-soluble condensation product which is obtained by reacting in an acid aqueous medium (a) 2-5 mols. of an aromatic hydroxy compound, (b) 1-6 mols. of urea, alkylurea or alkylene urea or a methylol or methylol ether derivative thereof, (c) 1-6 mols. of an aromatic mononuclear carboxylic, sulphonic, aminocarboxylic, aminosulphonic or hydroxycarboxylic acid or an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or an aryloxy fatty acid, and (d) 9-11 mols. of formaldehyde or a compound yielding formaldehyde, the formaldehyde preferably amounting to 38-50 mol. per cent of the total. Suitable compounds are (a) phenol, the cresols, 4-t-butylphenol, thymol, a - and b -naphthols. pyrocatechol (empyreumatic oils), partly methylated pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, 2- and 4-hydroxydiphenyl, 4,41-dihydroxy-diphenyl-methane, -propane and -sulphone, 4-hydroxydiphenylsulphone and phenylhydroxynaphthylsulphone, (b) urea, methylurea, N,N1-dimethylurea, ethyleneurea, propyleneurea, and acetylenediurea, and preferably methylol or dimethylolureas and alkyl ethers thereof, when (d) is correspondingly reduced, (c) benzoic acid, benzenesulphonic acid, p-toluenesulphonic acid, anthranilic acid, sulphanilic acid, 2-hydroxy-4-aminobenzoic acid, salicylic acid, gallic acid, malonic acid, glutaric acid and phenoxyacetic acid, (d) free formaldehyde, formalin, 1,3,5-trioxane, paraformaldehyde and hexamethylene tetramine. The condensation is preferably conducted between 30 DEG C. and the reflux point. The products may be washed with hot water and dried in vacuo, or on a roller or in a spray dryer. They are soluble, e.g. in methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, and acetone, and may be used as laking agents for basic dyes, e.g. auramine, rhodamine, Victoria Blue, methyl violet and crystal violet dyes and malachite green, to be used in carbon paper waxes, lithographic compositions and ballpoint pen inks. In examples, hydroxy diphenylsulphone, phenol or 4,41-dihydroxy-diphenylsulphone, plus thymol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, 2 - hydroxydiphenyl or p - t - butyl-phenol, and salicylic acid, and dimethylolurea or a urea-formaldehyde mixture are added to concentrated HCl and refluxed. In other examples, benzoic, anthranilic, sulphanilic or salicylic acid and dimethylolurea or its methyl ether or dimethylol ethyleneurea are added separately to the reaction product of 4,41-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone or p-t-butylphenol with formalin in hydrochloric acid solution. A flexographic printing ink containing 30 parts of a styrene/diethyl maleate copolymer, 90 of ethanol, 10 of ethylene glycol, 7 of rhodamine B and 14 of a hydroxydiphenylsulphone/thymol/ salicylic acid/dimethylolurea condensate is described.

Abstract: Alkali-soluble condensation products are prepared by reacting in an alkaline aqueous medium (a) one or more phenols or naphthols with (b) formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor and reacting the resin oil obtained in a non-acid aqueous medium in any sequence with (c) one or more ureas having the formula in which R1 denotes a hydrogen atom, a C1- 4 alkyl radical or -CO-NR5-R2; R2 denotes a hydrogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl radical; R3 denotes an alkylene radical having up to three carbon atoms which may bear one or more hydroxyl groups or may be interrupted by -O-, -NH- or -N(R4); R4 denoting a hydrogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical and R5 each of which may be the same or different denotes a hydrogen atom, a hydroxymethyl group or an alkoxymethyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms in the alkoxy radical and (d) one or more mononuclear aromatic carboxylic or sulphonic acids, which may contain hydroxyl or amino groups, aryloxy fatty acids or aliphatic polycarboxylic acids which may contain hydroxyl groups. The preferred component (a) is a phenol or naphthol which is free from sulphonic groups. Component (b) may be an aqueous solution of formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, trioxymethylene or hexamethylene tetramine. The preferred components (c) are urea, a monoalkylurea, a symmetrical dialkylurea, a N, N1-alkylenurea or a methyol or methylol ether derivative thereof. The acid (d) may be benzoic acid, phthalic acid, salicylic acid, o-cresotinic acid, gallic acid, an amino-benzoic acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, adipic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, citric acid, phenoxyacetic and cresoxyacetic acids, sulphanilic and metalinic acids. The products may be used as laking agents for basic dyes. Flexographic printing inks are obtained by dissolving a copolymer of styrene and the acid ester of maleic acid with n-butanol in a mixture of ethanol and ethylene glycol and adding to this a basic dye such as rhodamine, auramine, malachite green, diamond green and Victoria blue dyes and one of the above condensation products.

Abstract: White tanning agents are produced by condensation of a sulphonated or sulphomethylated phenol or naphthol, an aldehyde and 0.001-0.01% of a light-fast blue organic dye. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde. The dye may be azo-compound or an anthroquinone derivative which has reactive hydrogen atoms, is soluble or sparingly soluble in water and absorbs light between 0.580 and 0.650 m . The dye may be reacted with some of the aldehyde and then added to the remaining reactants either before or after they are condensed. The products may also be used in dispersion to whiten paper. Dyes specified are: (For formulae see previous page.) In examples the following are condensed: (1) phenol, H2SO4, urea, aqueous formaldehyde and dye 1, (2) phenol, H2SO4, urea, aqueous formaldehyde and dye 3, (3) 4,41-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone, Na2SO3, aqueous formaldehyde, and dye 2, (4) 4,41-di-hydroxydiphenylsulphone, Na2SO3, aqueous formaldehyde, H2SO4 and dye 5. The products are further treated with NaOH (1, 2 and 4), HCOOH (1 and 2), CH3COOH (1 and 2), oxalic acid (3 and 4) and NaHSO4 (3 and 4).
