Abstract: A moulding composition comprises (1) a major proportion of polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene with a minor amount of acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate or acrylate, vinyl carbazole, vinyl naphthalene or acenaphthylene, and (2) a copolymer of butadiene and di-normalbutyl fumarate containing 1-10 mols. butadiene to 1 mol. fumarate, and preferably up to 5 per cent of acrylamide and/or methacrylamide. The components may be mixed as solutions or aqueous dispersions or the powdered copolymer may be incorporated into polystyrene on mixing rollers or in endless screw machines. After mixing, preferably at between 5 DEG and 50 DEG C., the aqueous dispersions may be precipitated with formic acid, aluminium or magnesium salts, caustic soda solution, sodium chloride, methanol or ethanol and the precipitate dried or evaporated on spray rollers or atomizers. Examples describe the preparation of polystyrene and a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile by heating in stages an aqueous dispersion containing a sodium salt of hydroxyoctadecane sulphonic acid, potassium persulphate and sodium pyrophosphate at pH 10 and finally removing monostyrene by blowing with nitrogen; and the preparation or copolymer of butadiene- and dibutyl fumarate, with or without acrylamide or methacrylamide in emulsions containing sodium salts of hydroxyoctadecane and di-isobutylnaphthalene sulphonic acids, an addition product of ethylene oxide and octadecyl alcohol, potassium persulphate and sodium pyrophosphate at pH 8. The moulded products have high impact strength.
