Abstract: An anode of an alkali metal chloride electrolytic cell having a horizontal cathode, preferably of mercury, is adjusted, e.g. to lower the graphite anode plate 2 towards the cathode, by rotating a support member 4 resting loosely on the cell cover 6, which member carries or has formed therein a nut 5 engaging a screw thread 3 on the upper end of the anode shaft 1 which, where it passes through the cover, is sealed by a plug 8 of elastomeric material such as rubber having a central opening provided with grooves or a labyrinth. The opening in the cell cover may have an upwardly directed flange 7; the upper portion of the plug may be extended to form a collar (see Fig.4, not shown) turned over the flange. The screwthreads of the shaft 1 and nut 5 may be of metal and graphite respectively, or vice versa.
