Abstract: A Sn, Ti or Zr catalyst used in the esterification of phthalic anhydride or adipic acid with 6-13C alcohols is removed by (1) treatment of the crude ester with aq. alkali at is not >100 degrees C and (2) decanting the aq. hydrolysed catalyst contg. phase. In (I) the neutral or weakly acidic crude ester is treated for >=3 mins. with 5-20 pt. wt. per 100 pt. wt. crude ester of a 0.1-5 wt.% aq. alkali soln. so that an emulsion is formed. The size of the drops in the organic phase is 0.5-10 (0.5-3) mm. Esters of purity >99% are obtd. They are used as plasticisers.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of phthalic anhydride by oxidizing o-xylene and/or naphthalene over a supported catalyst containing vanadium pentoxide and titanium dioxide, at from 350 DEG to 500 DEG C, in which the o-xylene or naphthalene is passed, with an oxygen-containing carrier gas, over the catalyst, and in which the catalyst in the first 25-50 per cent by volume of the total catalyst volume, in the direction of flow of the mixture of o-xylene or naphthalene and carrier gas, contains from 0.01 to 0.3 per cent by weight, based on titanium dioxide, of rubidium, but no phosphorus, in the active composition, while the remainder of the catalyst contains from 0.02 to 0.8 per cent by weight, based on titanium dioxide, of phosphorus, but no rubidium, in the active composition.

Abstract: Complete esterification of dicarboxylic acids comprises introducing a mixt. of diester (I), monoester (II), alcohol (III) and esterification catalyst into a column at b.pt. of (III) or a temp. up to 40 degrees C. higher. The liq. mixt. passes up the flooded column in the same direction as water and alcohol vapour. The rise speed of the vapour bubbles is reduced, and water and (III) are removed as overhead, while crude (I) is taken off as a side-stream below the column head. The starting mixt. comprises 50-70 wt. % (ROOC)2A (A=1,2-phenylene or (CH2)4; R=4-11C alkyl); 3-15% HOOC.R.COOR; 27-35% ROH, and 0.05-0.1 wt. % catalyst. No azeotropic agent is needed to remove the water and a uniform temp. profile and constant boiling conditions are maintained in the column, so fractionation is avoided. Back-saponification of the prodn. does not occur.
