Abstract: alpha-Chloroisopropyl-substituted aromatics are obtained in high yield by treating isopropenyl-substituted aromatics with hydrogen chloride gas in the absence of a solvent. The alpha-chloroisopropyl-substituted aromatics serve as initiators for the cationic polymerization of isobutene.
