Abstract: Porous shaped thermoplastic articles are moulded in an electrical high frequency field (see Group V) from a water containing mixture of a finely particled expandable thermoplastic, e.g. polystyrene, polymethacrylic acid esters which contain blowing agents and may be partly expanded before moulding, and a high molecular weight substance as a binding agent, e.g. polyacrylic acid esters, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl chloride or vinyl acetate, methyl cellulose, natural adhesives, urea formaldehyde or phenol formaldehyde condensates.ALSO:Porous shaped thermoplastic articles which have a low density and high mechanical strength are moulded by heating in an electrical high frequency field and thus expanding a water containing mixture of a finely particled expandable thermoplastic e.g. polystyrene, polymethacrylic acid esters which contain blowing agents and may be partly expanded beforehand, and a high molecular weight substance as a binding agent e.g. polyacrylic acid esters, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl chloride or vinyl acetate, methyl cellulose, natural adhesives, urea formaldehyde or phenol formaldehyde condensates. The moulds which may be of polyvinyl chloride, polymethacrylic acid esters or wood may be perforated and to accelerate the expansion the steam formed may be sucked out from the mould. The mould may be coated with an adhesive e.g. polyvinyl propionate.
