Abstract: A process for the preparation of N-substituted phthalimidines comprises heating together an o-cyanobenzyl chloride or bromide (which may bear inert nuclear substituents such as halogen, cyano, alkyl, alkoxy, acyl or aryl), a primary amine and water. The reaction is conducted either by refluxing the reagents, or by reaction under superatmospheric pressure in an autoclave above 50 DEG C. Time of reaction is of the order of 15 hours. Suitable primary amines may be saturated or unsaturated and have branched or straight chains; if the amine has three or more C atoms, it may bear inert substituents, e.g. halogen, CN or alkoxy. The product is obtained from the reaction mixture by solvent extraction, using an organic solvent immiscible with water, followed by washing with aqueous alkali followed by drying. The solvent is then removed by distillation.
