    Abstract: Impact resistant graft polymeric materials are made by polymerizing 97 to 70 parts by weight of styrene, or a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile in a weight ratio of from 90:10 to 65:35, in the presence of 3 to 30 parts by weight of a copolymer of 30 to 90 parts by weight of butadiene and 10 to 70 parts by weight of a C3-C18 alcohol ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, the copolymer having a K value of between 50 and 150. Specified carboxylic esters are n-butyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates, di-n-butyl and diisobutyl fumarates, and di-n-propyl maleate. The styrene-containing monomeric material may contain minor amounts of other monomers, e.g. alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl toluene or chlorostyrene. In addition to the carboxylic esters of the defined type, the butadiene copolymers may contain minor proportions of other monomers, e.g. methyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl acrylate and vinyl carbazole. The butadiene copolymer may be supplemented by other rubbery polymers, e.g. copolymers of butadiene and styrene or acrylonitrile, polychloroprene, polybutadiene and polyacrylates. The polymerization is preferably carried out by dissolving the butadiene copolymer in the styrene-containing monomeric material with the aid, if desired, of an organic solvent, and heating the mixture in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. di-tert.-butyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide or azodiisobutyronitrile. Also present during polymerization may be regulators and lubricants.

    Abstract: High molecular weight polyformaldehyde is stabilized against thermal degradation by reaction with an isocyanate. Specified isocyanates are phenyl isocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, toluylene-2, 4-di-isocyanate, phenylene-1, 4-di-isocyanate, naphthylene-1, 5-isocyanate, dicyclo-hexylmethane 4, 41-di-isocyanate, and triphenyl-methane-4, 41, 411-tri-isocyanate. The polyformaldehyde may be swollen with a hydroxylfree solvent before reaction with the iso-cyanate, e.g. formamide methyl or dimethylformamide, dimethyl-sulphoxide, dimethyl sulphone and butyrolactone. The product may be subsequently heated with a mono- or poly-hydric phenol, e.g. phenol, p-cresol, 2, 6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol, butylated hydroxy-anisol, hydroxytolyl-camphane and di-(p-t-butylphenol)-mono or disulphide amongst others.

    Abstract: Copolymers of 40-80 parts butadiene and 60-20 parts of esters of fumaric and/or maleic acids with C1-12 alcohols are produced by copolymerizing the monomers in aqueous emulsion at a temperature not greater than 30 DEG C. in the presence of an organic peroxide and ethylene diamine as activator. The peroxide may be benzoyl or cyclohexanone peroxide, or cumene or butyl hydroperoxide. A chain transfer agent, e.g. diisopropyl xanthic disulphide or mercaptans, e.g. tert.-dodecyl, may be present. Emulsifiers, e.g. alkali metal salts of fatty acids, resin soaps, alkyl, e.g. C14-16, sulphates and sulphonates may be used. The copolymers may be stabilized, in aqueous emulsion, with di(2-oxy-5-methyl-3-tert.-butylphenyl)-methane; and may contain n-dibutyl tetrahydrophthalate as a by-product.
