    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a method for polarizing and orienting an org. material having nonlinear optical chromophors of 0.5 to 10μm in the film thickness of a chromophor-contg. layer by making it possible to efficiently polarize the org. material at a low temp. and simultaneously to obtain a stable regular state at a high degree by the polarization at room temp. CONSTITUTION: This polarization and orientation method consists of impartation of an electric field and simultaneous exposure to and of the org. material layer which is obtd. by spin coatin a soln. of the material having the nonlinear optical chromophors exhibiting a donor/receptor structure or by vapor deposition or knife coating of the material having the nonlinear optical chromophors exhibiting the donor/receptor structure, having 0.5 to 10μm film thickness, contains the nonlinear optical chromophors exhibiting the donor/receptor structure and allows E/Z isomerization.
