    Abstract: The invention comprises triarylmethane dyes having the formula in which R1 denotes a low molecular weight alkyl group, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aliphatic-cycloaliphatic radicals which may be connected to form a fused cycloaliphatic ring, and Y is a chlorine or bromine ion. The dyes of the above formula are made by condensing together p,p1-bisdialkyl-aminobenzophenones of formula with a secondary amine having the formula in the presence of a condensing agent containing chlorine or bromine. In formulae III and IV, R1, R2 and R3 have the meanings as above; as condensing agents phosphorus trichloride, tribromide, pentachloride, oxychloride, oxybromide and phosgene are specified. The reactions are carried out in inert solvents, e.g. toluene and xylene, and the dyes produced have good solubility in alcohol and castor oil.

    Abstract: Textile materials of polyacrylonitrile or copolymers containing acrylonitrile are spindyed with basic dyestuffs of the formula: or in which X and Y = divalent groups which with the nitrogen atoms make up 5- or 6-membered rings, R=an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group and Z-=an anion of a medium strong to strong acid such as halogen hydracids, sulphuric and methylsulphuric acids, p-toluene sulphonic acid and perchloric acid. Mixtures of the above dyes with diazacyanine may be employed. The dyestuff is incorporated in a spinning solution of polyacrylonitrile in dimethylformamide. The heterocyclic rings containing the radical X in the above formul may be thiazole, selenazole, pyridine, pyrimidine or indolenine rings; the radical Y with the nitrogen atom forms an indole, carbazole or quinoline ring which is hydrogenated at the nitrogen atom. All the rings may carry neutral substitutents and orthocondensed benzene or naphthalene rings, which may also be further substituted by neutral groups. Dyeing may be effected in acid, neutral or weakly alkaline baths or, if desired, spin dyeing may be effected by incorporating the dyestuff in a spinning solution of polyacrylonitrile in dimethylformamide. The heterocyclic rings containing the radical X in the above formul may be thiazole, selenazole, pyridine, pyrimidine or indolenine rings; the radical Y with the nitrogen atom forms an indole, carbazole or quinoline ring which is hydrogenated at the nitrogen atom. All the rings may carry neutral substituents and ortho-condensed benzene or naphthalene rings, which may also be further substituted by neutral groups. The dyestuffs may be prepared by condensing aldehydes of the formula with secondary amines of the formula or by condensing methylene compounds of the formula or their salts with formyl compounds of the formula or with heterocyclic imines of the formula in the presence of formylating agents such as formylamides.
