Abstract: Prodn. of N-alkylcarbamoyl chlorides (I) of the formula R23NR1-CO-Cl (in which R1 is -CR3=CR32 or -CH2Cl; and R2 and R3 gps. independently are H or a 1-8C aliphatic gp.) comprises the reaction of a monomeric Schiff's base (II) of formula R23C-N=R4 (in which R4 is =CH2 or =CR3CH32) with COCl2 in the gas phase at 110-300 degrees C. (I) are valuable starting materials for the prodn. of lacquer raw materials, plastics, paints and plant protective agents. The process is simpler and more economical than usual and a large number of (I) can be produced in good yield and purity. (II) can also be in the gas phase and no solvents or amines are necessary. In an example, 500 (wt.)pts./h trimerised N-methyl-ethylidene-imine were depolymerised and passed with 1000 pts./h COCl2 through a tube at 170 degrees C. 2376 pts. (60%) N-methyl-N-vinyl-carbamoyl chloride, b.pt. 60 degrees C/23 torr, were recovered from the prod.
