Abstract: 1,213,343. Catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide with steam. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 10 April, 1968 [15 April, 1967], No. 17188/68. Heading C1A. A process for the preparation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide from gases containing carbon monoxide and steam, comprises passing the gases over a catalyst made from nickel and/or cobalt sulphides or oxides, oxides or sulphides of a transition metal of Group VI of the Periodic Table, and an alumina containing supporting material containing zinc and/or magnesium oxides. The reaction is carried out at pressures of 1 to 150 atmospheres (absolute) and a temperature of 180 C. to 550 C. The catalyst preferably contains at least 10% (wt) of aluminium oxide and at least 5% (wt.) magnesium and/or zinc oxide or a mixture thereof. Under the reaction conditions the catalyst preferably contains 15% to 85% of aluminium - magnesium or aluminium - zinc spinel. Oxidic forms of the catalyst may be prepared by grinding the dry constituent oxides together or impregnating the supporting material with solutions of salts of the metals specified, forming a paste, extruding or pelletizing, then drying. The mechanical strength of the catalyst can be improved by including an hydraulic binder such as Portland cement or calcium aluminate. The catalyst is activated by heating to 400 C. to 600 C. in a stream of air. Sulphidic catalysts are prepared by passing a mixture of steam, hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen over the oxidic forms for 3 hours at 400 C. Sulphidic catalysts are more active than oxidic catalysts.
