Abstract: In a memory processing unit, a magnetic-head positioning device having a longitudinally actuated carriage with a guide plate carrying the head, or heads, which plate has longitudinal edges and an upper and lower face, one of these faces being in engagement with a spool wheel driving the plate via a belt and the longitudinal edges of the guide plate being guided between a pair of anti-friction bearings. Linear, three-point contact of the guide plate with the bearings and with the spool wheel is insured, regardless of lateral displacement of the guide plate, by mounting the bearings so that they are tiltable, in a plane transverse to the longitudinal movement of the guide plate, by a limited amount.

Abstract: The head positioning system for magnetic tape on disc systems uses a stepping motor drive together with an optical incremental encoder to provide precise control. The pick-up (7) is mounted on a carriage (4) that is supported on a leadscrew (5). A stepping motor (1) rotates a coupled gear (2,3) pair to rotate the leadscrew and so transmit linear motion to the carriage. The stepping motor shaft has a coupled encoder disc (6) with a single hole (12) that aligns with a hole in the output gear every revolution. An opto-electrical transmitter- receiver (10,11) combination allows the aligned hole conductor to be detected.
