Abstract: The flange (2) which is part of or is mounted at the end of a pipe has a ring-shaped spigot (3) which engages with an annular groove (7) in the counter-part (4) which is e.g. the flange on a connecting pipe. The OD of the groove (7) is larger than the OD of the spigot (3) so that there is an annular gap around the spigot in which an elastomer O-ring is mounted.The depth of the annular groove (7) is approx. equal to the height of the spigot. Alternatively, the depth can be larger than this height, in which case a seal of L-shaped cross-section is mounted in the groove.
