Abstract: Vinyl glyoxal derivs. of formula (Ia) are new: R' = 1-20C alkyl, 2-20C alkenyl, 3-7C cycloalkyl, or phenyl opt. substd. by 1-12C alkyl, 1-12C alkoxy, halogen, CN or CF3. Prodn. of vinyl glyoxal derivs. of formula (I) is effected by (a) reacting of formula R''CHO (III) in the presence of a catalyst to form acyloins of formula (IVa) and/or (IVb); (b) oxidising (IV) to the corresp. dicarbonyl cpd. (V); and (c) subjecting (V) to gas-phase pyrolysis at 500-700 deg. C under reduced pressure, esp. below 0.1 mbar: R = alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or opt. substd. phenyl; R'' = R or bicyclo(2,2,1)hept-5-en-2-yl.
