Abstract: Textiles are washed with phosphate-free or -deficient detergent compsns. contng. water-insoluble, solid, powdery cation exchangers having a Ca-bonding power >=80 (>=120) mg. CaO/g. through COOH gps. in alkali salt form, and prepd. by (a) polymerising a monomer mixt. contng. (i) acrylic and/or methacrylic acid or alkali salts and (ii) acrylamide and/or methacrylamide and HCHO (condensates) opt. with NH3 and/or (iii) (meth)acrylamide and cpds. contg. >=2 N-methylol gps. in molecule and/or (iv) N-methylol-(meth)acrylamide or its ethers with 1-6C alkanols, in an aq. medium contng. a radical former, at 180 (100-160) degrees C., with cross-linking and removal of water from polymer obtd.; and (b) communiting polymer to particle size 0.8 mm. Conversion of COOH gps. to alkali salt form takes place, if necessary, before or after (b). Environmental pollution and drinking water contamination are prevented.
