Packing for a gas/ liquid contact column consists of cylindrical pieces made of a plastics material such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or polypentene, each piece having sets of openings 2 (Fig. 1) in its wall and sets of stiffening webs 4 which are axially connected. As shown in Fig. 2, the sets of webs are set at an angle of 45 degrees to each other and in this case the axial connecting-piece is of star cross-section. The openings 2 shown as rectangular may be square, circular, semi-circular or of oval-shape.

    Abstract: 1,061,968. Valves. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. and KNAPSACKGRIESHEIM A.G. Dec. 3, 1963 [Dec. 4, 1962], No. 47615/63. Heading F2V. A valve, particularly for high-pressure corrosive gases, comprises a housing (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), a spindle (5), (13) and a stuffing box (6). The box (6) has a ring (16) acted upon by a nut (17) which has longitudinal grooves, e.g. nine, of semi-circular cross-section in its outer face. The housing (1) has complementary grooves in its inner surface, the number of grooves being a multiple of the number of grooves in the nut (17), e.g. three, so that shear pins (34) can be placed in the bores formed by the grooves to prevent the nut (17) accidentally unscrewing during operation of the valve. The valve has a threaded portion (32) so that it can be attached to a gas cylinder and inlet and outlet ducts (2) and (3) respectively. The lower spindle part (5) has a conical head (7) which cooperates with a valve seat (8) and a neck portion (11) which is located in a slot (31) in the upper spindle portion (13). The portion (13) carries a nut (33), for operating the valve, secured to it by a nut (25) locked by a ring of plastic (26). A gas-tight cap (39) is fitted over the valve during storage and has a packing ring (42) and vent valve (44). A screwed cap 49 serves to protect the assembled valve. The seats (8) and (45) may have inserts of corrosion-resistant metal, e.g. alloy steel.
