Abstract: Continuous process for preparing carboxylic acids by reacting (cyclic) olefins or (cyclic)alkanols with CO under press. and in the presence of H2SO4 at 0-80 degrees C, then hydrolysing the reaction product with ice-water, is improved when the reaction is carried out in a cyclic system in which the reaction mixt. is continuously recycled to the reaction zone via an external circuit. The acids are used to prepare lubricants, siccatives, esters (solvents) and peroxy esters (polymsn. initiators). Provides better removal of reaction heat with a uniform temp. profile throughout the reaction so less by-product formation. Less acid is needed. Pref. starting materials are 3-20C olefins, 5-12C cycloolefins, 2-20C alkanols or 5-12C cycloalkanols esp. (di)isobutylene, 2-ethyl-hexanol, alpha-methylpentanol or 6-10C olefin fractions.
