Abstract: Leather is prepd. by pre-tanning with a soln. contg. 1 mole of an aliphatic, 2-8C omega,omega-dialdehyde or its acetal in a 10-40% aq. soln. contg. 4-6 moles. HCHO. The soln. is obtd. by mixing at a pH of 5-10 and warming to 80 degrees-95 degrees C. After pre-tanning, the leather is tanned with the usual mineral tannage, omitting the stages of degreasing, pickling and neutralisation. The mineral tannage should contain 1-2.2% Cr2O3, 2.5-4% Al2O3 or 4-7% ZrO2 on bare leather wt. depending on the tube used. Used for the prodn. of white or brightly coloured leather. The use of aldehyde tannages is known, but although white leathers of increased shrinkage temp. could be obtd., no rationalisation or simplification of the tanning process was achieved. This simplifies the operation, reduces the problem of waste disposal and even improves leather quality. In an example chrome leather was prepd. by de-liming, pre-tanning in a mixt. of 30% H2O, 2% of 45% aldehyde compsn. and 2% anionic greasing agent for 30 min. at pH 6.0 and tanning with 6% of a 50% commercial chrome tanning agent (1.3% Cr2O3) for 5h in the drum.
