Abstract: The invention relates to a method for making hybrid yarn from thermoplastic fibres and reinforcing fibres, the fibres in each case per se being spread out to give a tape and the two tapes being passed together over rollers or rods and homogeneously mixed. The spreading is carried out in such a way that the reinforcing fibre tape is wider by 20 to 100% than the thermoplastic fibre tape. The hybrid yarn can be dressed and processed to give material which can be pressed to give composite fibre materials.

Abstract: The bridge (3) between the arms (2) of the grip (1) is also a tube of consolidated thermoplastic fibre/carbon fibre-hybrid yarn, which is filled with a foamed thermoplastic with a density between 20 and 400 g/l. The thermoplastic fibres comprise a polyamide and the plastic foam is a polyamide, a polysulphone or a polyether sulphone. To make the racquet frame, a tubular network of thermoplastic/carbon fibre/hybrid yarn is formed, into which is introduced a flexible, thin-walled, inflatable hose. The tubular network is formed into the shape of a racquet frame, and a piece of tubular hybrid yarn network is laid as bridge (3) between the arms (2) of the frame so that the two arms are encompassed by two tongue-shaped segments of the bridge. The frame is placed in a metal mould which is then closed. The hose is then inflated exerting a pressure on the hybrid yarn network which by subsequent heating is consolidated to form a fibre-reinforced tube.

Abstract: The mfr. of tubular or hollow moulded parts comprises (i) forming a network of thermoplastic fibres and reinforcing fibres (hybrid yarn), the contours being those of the part; (ii) introducing a thin-walled, extensible tube in the network; (iii) inserting the structure in a multicomponent form; (iv) heating at a temp. above the melt temp. of the thermoplastic fibres to consolidate the part; and (v) cooling and demoulding. The tube is partly filled with a propellant contg. thermoplastic which, on heating, foams producing a pressure which compresses the yarn network. Pref. the thermoplastic fibre are of a polyamide. The thermoplastic contg. propellant is a polyamide polysulphone or polyether sulphone. The tube is of rubber modified polyamide or silicone rubber. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for tennis racquet, golf clubs, baseball bats and tyre frames. Tubular parts of variable dia and hollow parts can be mfd. in the same way.
