Abstract: A bright drying emulsion comprises an aqueous wax dispersion and an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer obtained by polymerizing a mixture of (a) 70 to 90 parts by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic compound, e.g. styrene or a methylstyrene; (b) 1 to 20 parts by weight of at least one ester of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol having up to 12 carbon atoms; (c) 1 to 15 parts by weight of at least one mono-ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol having 2-6 carbon atoms; and (d) 1 to 15 parts by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid containing 3-24 carbon atoms; the weight ratio of wax to copolymer being from 20:80 to 80:20 when ionic wax dispersions are used, and from 40:60 to 90:10 when nonionic wax dispersions are used. Waxes specified are esterified montan wax, carnauba wax, paraffin waxes melting above 70 DEG C., and water-soluble ethylene copolymers, e.g. ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers. The wax dispersions may contain anionic surfactants, e.g. amine soaps of fatty acids, or non-ionic surfactants, e.g. ethoxylated fatty alcohols or alkyl phenols. The copolymer dispersions may be emulsified with the sodium salt of the sulphate of ethoxylated isooctyl phenol. The bright drying emulsions may include additional components, e.g. triisobutyl phosphate (a softener and levelling agent); alkali-soluble resins, e.g. shellac, maleic acid copolymers, colophonymaleic acid adducts; and water-dispersible phenol-formaldehyde-resins.ALSO:A bright drying emulsion comprises an aqueous wax dispersion and an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer obtained by polymerizing a mixture of (a) 70 to 90 parts by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic compound, (b) 1 to 20 parts by weight of at least one ester of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol having up to 12 carbon atoms, (c) 1 to 15 parts by weight of at least one mono-ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol having 2-6 carbon atoms, and (d) 1 to 15 parts by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid containing 3-24 carbon atoms; the weight ratio of wax to copolymer being from 20:80 to 80:20 when ionic wax dispersions are used, and from 40:60 to 90:10 when non-ionic wax dispersions are used. Examples of monomers (a) are styrene, 2-methylstyrene, 4-methylstyrene and a -methylstyrene. Monomer (b) is preferably a C1- 4 aliphatic alcohol of acrylic or methacrylic acid; but esters of maleic and fumaric acid and esters of other alcohols are also referred to. Monomer (c) may be an ester of ethylene glycol, 1,2- or 1,3 - propylene glycol, 1,4 - butanediol, 1,6 - hexane-diol, glycerine, trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol. Suitable acid monomers (d) include acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, itaconic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, elaeostearic and erucic acids. Abstract: A slow-release PKN fertilizer is produced by coating the PKN granules with an aqueous solution of a mixture of 20-80% of an aminoplast precondensate and 80-20% of a polyester of a polyhydric carboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, and curing the resin coating. The aminoplast precondensate may be partly or wholly etherified with methanol. The polyester may be partly precondensed with the aminoplast precondensate. The polyester may be modified by the presence of a C8-22 fatty acid or a C1-18 monohydric alcohol. 5-50% of the polyhydric carboxylic acid of the polyester may be replaced by the C8-22 fatty acid. The solution may also contain a water-miscible organic solvent, a substance to improve the flow and film formation, a corrosion inhibitor, and an aminoplast hardening agent. The solution may contain 30-80% of coating agent. The granules may have a particle size of 4-7 mm. Curing may be effected at 60-150 DEG C. for 2-20 minutes. One or more coatings may be applied. Examples of aminoplast precondensate and polyester constituents are given. Specifications 750,809, 785,645, 815,829, 908,493 and 954,555 are referred to.
