Abstract: Textile materials are dyed, printed and/or optically brightened in a process wherein the material is treated in the presence of an alkaline reacting agent, if necessary at elevated temperature, with at least one dye or optical brightening agent which has one or more reactive hydrogen atoms preferably attached via N,O or S or which is capable of forming such atoms during the process, and with at least one uncoloured, non-fluorescent heterocyclic compound which contains, preferably attached via N, at least two radicals of the formula in which X is a direct linkage, a phenylene or a substituted phenylene radical and Y is a halogen, preferably a Cl or Br atom. The present process is particularly applicable to textile materials of native and/or regenerated cellulose but may also be applied to materials of cellulose acetate, acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, aromatic polyester, polyamides, wool and silk. A number of suitable inorganic and organic alkaline reacting agents are specified. The dyes and brightening agents may be from a large number of specified series, may be water-soluble or water-insoluble and may also be reactive dyes. The preferred polyfunctional compounds have the formula in which the groups of formula I are derived from chloro-acetyl chloride and p-chloromethylbenzoyl chloride. The alkaline agent, dye or brightener and polyfunctional compound may be applied successively in any sequence but are preferably applied together possibly together with one or more dispersing agents and/or dyeing auxiliaries and/or printing auxiliaries. The polyfunctional compounds may be employed as solutions in a water-miscible solvent, e.g. dimethyl-formamide. Fixation may be achieved at room temperature or by steaming or dry heating at 30-200 DEG C. Examples of dyeing cotton and rayon staple fabrics are given.

Abstract: In a process for dyeing and/or printing textile material, the material is treated with uncoloured polyfunctional compounds which are capable under alkaline conditions of effecting wash-fast fixation of dyes containing reactive hydrogen atoms on cellulose and with a dye containing one or more reactive hydrogen atoms preferably attached via N, O or S or capable of forming same during process and containing, preferably attached via N, at least one acryloyl or vinyl sulphone radical or a propionyl radical bearing in the b -position an -OH group esterified by a strong oxyacid or an ether, thioether or sulphone group, or bearing a b -hydroxethyl radical esterified by a strong oxyacid, or at least one b -haloethylsulphonamide radical or at least one radical having the grouping -N=C-Cl, or capable of forming such radicals during the process. The uncoloured polyfunctional compounds may be compounds which contain two or more Ch2=CH-CO- groups attached via N or two or more CH2=CH-SO2- groups attached via N or O or at least three ethylenimino groups attached via C or P or which are capable of forming such groups during the process as well as heterocyclic compounds containing at least three epoxy groups. The process may be applied to the textile materials of natural and regenerated cellulose, wool, silk, linear polyamides, acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, cellulose acetate and aromatic polyesters. A number of suitable reactive dyestuffs are listed which may be water-insoluble or preferably water-soluble and come from the azo, anthraquinone and phthalocyanine series. The alkaline agents may be alkali metal hydroxides, carbonates, bicarbonate, acetate, disodium or trisodium phosphate, pyridine, benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide or mixtures thereof. The dye, polyfunctional compound and alkali may be applied to the material in any sequence but preferably simultaneously, if desired together with dispersing agents and vinal auxiliaries. The polyfunctional compounds may be employed in aqueous solution or dispersion or as solutions in water-miscible organic solvents. Fixation may be achieved at 15-30 DEG C. but preferably by steaming or day heating at 70-150 DEG C. Examples are given. Specifications 867,546, 885,814, 900,372 and 915,457 are referred to.
