Abstract: In a device for non destructively testing materials, for example highly stressed components made of fibre-reinforced plastics and other materials having strong ultrasound scattering, for very small defects by irradiation with ultrasonic waves, a diaphragm (3) is placed in front of the receiver test head (4). The diaphragm isolates the receiver test head (4) from laterally incident stray signals, substantially reduces the region of a component (2) under test at any instant and improves the detection capability for small defects as a result of the increased ratio of defect area to test region.

Abstract: In a method of monitoring the development of cracks in machine parts and components, in particular in engine and machine shafts, by irradiation with ultrasonic waves, a hole in which a receiver test head for receiving the ultrasonic waves emitted by a transmitting test head is displaced is made in the crack-free section of the machine part or component. The hole is situated near the crack plane on a side of the latter which is remote from the transmitting test head and it extends to a greater depth than the crack plane and does not intersect the latter.
