A light-resistant coating is prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate or blocked polyisocyanate not containing any aromatic radicals with a copolymer of:- (1) 15 to 40% by weight of a monoester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol; (2) 5 to 70% of an ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with an alkanol which forms homopolymers having a glass temperature of from 3-120‹ C; (3a) 10 to 55% of a vinyl aromatic or isopropypenyl aromatic hydrocarbon of 8-14 carbon atoms or (3b) 10 to 20% of a vinyl ester of an alkane monocarboxylic acid of 2-5 carbon atoms; (4) 0 to 10% of a vinyl ester as in (3b); and (5) 0 to 20% of one or more other olefinically unsaturated monomers whose polymerized radicals do not react with isocyanates, the polymer having been obtained by polymerization in an organic solvent inert to isocyanates in the presence of a regulator which is an organic sulphide not containing a mercapto group. The regulator is preferably a dialkylxanthic disulphide. In the examples the following copolymers are prepared in solution in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile and diisopropylxanthic disulphide, (1) butanediol monoacrylate, t-butylacrylate, styrene and optionally methylmethacrylate, vinyl acetate or acrylonitrile, (2) butanediol monoacrylate, vinyl acetate and t-butyl acrylate, (3) as (2) and including styrene, ethylene glycol monoacrylate and hexanediol monoacrylate and (4) ethylene glycol monoacrylate, styrene and t-butylacrylate. The copolymer solutions are mixed with N, N 1 , N 11 - tris - (isocyanatohexyl) - biuret and optionally hexamethylene isocyanate, and/or a pigment such as rutile, to form compositions suitable for coating.
