    Abstract: Solutions of molecular oxygen in liquid hydrocarbons are prepared by bringing a liquid hydrocarbon into contact with molecular oxygen under superatmospheric pressure in a vertical absorption zone, by a process in which (a) a layer of water is maintained at the lower end of the absorption zone, (b) molecular oxygen is passed into the layer of water, (c) a liquid hydrocarbon is fed in above the layer of water, (d) the finely divided molecular oxygen rising from the layer of water is passed upward together with the liquid hydrocarbon at from 0 DEG to 50 DEG C., with thorough mixing in the absorption zone, with the proviso that no cohesive gas phase is formed, and (e) the solution of molecular oxygen in the liquid hydrocarbon is discharged in the upper part of the absorption zone.

    Abstract: Solns. (I) of mol. O2 (II) in liq. hydrocarbons (III) are produced by contacting (III) with (II) under elevated pressure in a vertical absorption zone. The novel features are as follows: (a) there is a water layer (IV) at the lower end of the absorption zone; (b) (II) is passed into (IV); (c) (III) is supplied above (IV); (d) the finely-divided (II) rising from (IV) and (III) are passed upwards at 0-50 deg.C, with thorough mixing in the absorption zone, so that no coherent gas phase develops; and (e) (I) is discharged at the top of the absorption zone. (I) is recirculated in an amt. of 2-50 times the amt. of (III) supplied. The mixt. of (III) and (II) is passed through narrow points in the absorption zone. Absorption is carried out at 10-100 bar, depending on the amt. of (IV). A small amt. of liquid is removed at the top of the absorption zone. (IV) contains salts and surfactants.
