Abstract: In the production of acetylene and ethylene by the incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon, a further amount of the same or a different hydrocarbon is added to the reaction mixture at a point before the oxygen in the mixture is used up prior to that at which the maximum temperature would have been reached, followed by quenching with water. The first hydrocarbon may be a C1-C12 hydrocarbon, the second, the same or different liquid or vaporous C1-C12 hydrocarbon added in an amount of 10-80% by weight of the reaction gas. The gas is thereby cooled to 500 DEG -1200 DEG C.

Abstract: Olefines are separated from paraffins, when gaseous by countercurrent contact with a solvent and when liquid by extractive distillation, by selectively dissolving the olefines in a solvent which is a compound having a saturated, heterocyclic, 4-6 membered ring containing nitrogen or oxygen as the hetero atom and also containing a carbonyl group, which solvent may optionally contain 1-15% by weight of water. Specified are N-methyl pyrrolidone, pyrrolidone and butyrolactone. The hydrocarbons may contain 3-12 carbon atoms and diolefines and acetylenes may also be present, these also being recovered in the solvent. The olefines are recovered by heating the solution.ALSO:Olefins are separated from paraffins by dissolving the olefins in a selective solvent which is a compound having a saturated, heterocyclic, 4-6 membered ring containing a carbonyl group and nitrogen or oxygen, which solvent may optionally contain 1%-15% by weight of water. Specified solvents are N - methylpyrrolidone, pyrrolidone, and butyrolactone. The paraffin-olefine mixtures may contain 3-12 carbon atoms per molecule and may contain diolefines and acetylenes which are also dissolved, and the separation is effected by countercurrent contact with the solvent in the case of gaseous mixtures or by extractive distillation for liquids. The olefines are recovered by heating the solution.
