Abstract: Coloured copolymers are obtained from at least one dye containing an olefinic group and at least one other compound which contains a polymerizable olefinic group. The examples describe the polymerization in an aqueous emulsion with the aid of potassium persulphate of: (1) butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and the coupling product of diazotized p-aminostyrene and 1-(3-methyl-5-hydroxy - pyrazolyl - 1) - 2 - chlorophenylsulphonic acid-5; (2) as in (1) but employing the coupling product of diazotized p-aminostyrene and alpha-naphtholsulphonic acid-4; (3) methylmethacrylate and the coupling product of (2); (4) vinyl chloride, isooctyl acrylate, acrylic acid and the coupling product of diazotized 1-acryloylamino-4-aminobenzene with 1-(2-chloro - 5 - sulphophenyl) - 3 - methylpyrazolone-5; (5) butyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylamide and the coupling product of diazotized 1-acryloylamino-4-aminobenzene with 1-hydroxynaphthalene-4-sulphonic acid; (6) as in (5) but employing 1-amino-2-acetyl-4-acryloylamino-anthraquinone as the coloured monomer; (8) butyl acrylate, styrene, methacrylamide, N-vinyl imidazole quaternized with dimethyl sulphate and 4-acryloylaminoazobenzene; and also: (7) the polymerization in a butanol-toluene mixture of butyl acrylate, methacrylamide, vinyl propionate and 1-acryloylamino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone; (9) the bulk polymerization of a mixture of N-vinylcarbazole and 1 - acryloylamino - 4 - benzoylaminoanthraquinone containing di-tertiary butyl peroxide, azodiisobutyronitrile being sprinkled over the surface of the mixture; and (10) the bulk poly-merization of methyl methacrylate and the coupling product of diazotized 1-amino-4-acryloylamino-2,5-dimethoxybenzene and 2-hydroxynaphthalene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and n-butyl phthalate, the reaction being carried out in two stages, the second one being in a mould. Other specified dyestuff monomers are those of Specifications 779,781, 830,876, 858,183, 875,946 and 879,071. Other specified copolymerizable monomers include methacrylic, crotonic chloroacrylic, itaconic and maleic acids and their esters, amides and nitriles, allyl esters, vinylidene halides, vinyl ethers, N-vinyl lactams, vinylamines, divinyl benzene, methylene bis-acrylamides and ethylene glycol bis-acrylate. The copolymers are used in the production of shaped materials, e.g. films, fibres, plates, coatings and laminates. Specification 524,996 also is referred to.
