Abstract: A process for the production of linear polyesters pigmented with TiO2 comprises transesterifying an alkyl ester of a dicarboxylic acid with a glycol in the presence of a stabilized suspension of TiO2, and polycondensing the glycol ester, wherein the suspension stabilizer is an alumina sol of pH 4-6, a silicic acid sol of pH 7-9 or a polyphosphate sol of pH 6-8 -the pH being measured in 25% by weight solutions. The stabilizer sols are usually equal to 5-30% by weight of the TiO2, which itself is usually 0.3-2% by weight of the finished polyester. The suspension stabilizers may be pre-suspended in a glycol, e.g. ethylene, propylene or butylene glycols or cyclohexane dicarbinol, then added to a TiO2 suspension, or both may be suspended together. Suitable starting materials for the polyester preparation are methyl, ethyl or butyl esters of isophthalic, adipic, vanillic, or, preferably terephthalic acid, and ethylene, propylene, or butylene glycols. In examples TiO2 is added to make a 6% suspension in ethylene glycol containing 1% of an alumina sol of pH 4, or 1, 1.5 or 2% of a silicic acid sol of pH 8, or 1, 1.5 or 2% of a polyphosphate sol of pH 7, and the stability of these suspensions is shown. A polyester is prepared from dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol, a 1% alumina or silicic acid sol, zinc borate and antimony trioxide.
