Abstract: Preparation of chrome tanning solutions having a basicity of 33 to 50%, by reduction of solutions of dichromate in sulphuric acid with methanol in the presence of heat, followed if necessary by completion of the reduction with formic acid and/or sulphite. The solutions thus obtained need only to be diluted with water for use for tanning, without sodium sulphate having to be removed beforehand and without neutralisation having to be carried out during tanning. They can also be processed to give pulverulent tanning materials without problems by spray drying.
