    Abstract: The dyes are of formula (I): (in which R1 is H or opt. substd. 1-3C alkyl; and R2 is opt. substd. 1-10C alkyl, 3-12C alkoxyalkyl or 5-8C cycloalkyl). They are prepd. by reaction of a 1,4-diamino anthraquinone 2-carbonamide (II) with CN ions in organic or aq. -organic phase, with simultaneous or subsequent treatment with a dehydrogenating agent. The reaction is at pH 10.5-12 (where R1 is H) or at 8-11 (where R1 is alkyl). (I) are used for dyeing synthetic fibres, esp. linear polyesters, in brilliant turquoise shades. Formation of red impurities, which cause duller shades and are expensive to remove, is avoided by reaction within a narrow pH range and/or in the presence of buffers. In an example, 1-amino-4-methylamino anthraquinone 2-carboxylic acid gamma-methoxy propylamino antraquinone NaCN in presence of nitrobenzene and NH4HCO3, in methanol/formaldehyde soln., with addn. of acetic acid to give pH 9-9.3. After 3 hrs. under reflux and addn. of water, a blue dye no red impurities is obtd.
