Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject sizing agent for providing staple fiber and filament yarns with excellent sizing effects and film hardness by radically polymerizing a monoethylenic unsaturated monomer in the presence of a protein. CONSTITUTION: (A) A monoethylenic unsaturated monomer [preferable example; (meth)acrylic acid, etc.] is radically polymerized in the presence of (B) a protein (e.g. casein, gelatin or soybean) in water in the weight ratio of the component A to the component B of 0.5-90:99.5-10 to give a water-dispersible grafted substance. The grafted substance is applied to staple fiber and filament yarns of cellulose fiber, synthetic fiber, semisynthetic fiber, etc., has low tendency of mutually bonding sized rope yarns, exhibits an excellent sizing effect, is biodegradable and does not deteriorate an environment.
