Abstract: The present invention relates to a coated catalyst containing metal oxides, being free of noble metals and contains from 2 to 5.5 percent by weight of nickel monooxide NiO and from 0.5 do 3.5 percent by weight of cobalt monoxide CoO on a support based on magnesium oxide wherein the weight percentages are based on the catalyst total weight. The catalyst is used in a single-stage catalytic decomposition of ammonia and hydrogen cyanide in coke-oven gas containing sulfur and at a temperature ranging from 1000 do 1400 degC.
