Abstract: Dyestuff used for dyeing paper is an azobenzothiazole sulphonic acid cpd. of formula (I) (in which X is H, Cl, Br or SO3H; K is a gp. of formulae (II) or (III); Y is H, MeO or EtO; Z is H or SO3H; R is H or a (substd.)(cyclo)alkyl or aryl gp.). Pref. (I) has formula (IA) (in which R1 is phenyl or tolyl). (I) are suitable for dyeing paper pulps, esp. bleached cellulose, in the presence of Al salts. They give unusually high brilliance and very good fastness to light. In an example, 50 g mixt. of 60 pts. wood pulp and 40 pts. sulphite cellulose (35 deg. SR) were mixed with 2 l drinking water (10 deg. dH), 25 g 2% aq. (IA) soln. (R1 is tolyl), resin size dispersion (0.5 g resin) and 1.5 g alum and stirred for 15 mins. After dilution to 0.5% with acidified water, the suspension was made into sheets of paper (80 g/m2) and dried at 100 deg.C. An intensive greenish blue paper with good water fastness and very good light-fastness was obtd. The waste liquor was only slightly coloured.
