    Abstract: In antifoams based on oil-in-water emulsions, the oil phase of the emulsion contains (a) C12-C26-alcohols, distillation residues obtained in the preparation of alcohols by an oxosynthesis or by the Ziegler process and/or (b) fatty acid esters of C12-C22-carboxylic acids with monohydric, dihydric or trihydric C1-C18-alcohols, with or without (c) a hydrocarbon having a boiling point above 200 DEG C. or fatty acids of 12 to 22 carbon atoms, constitutes from 15 to 60% by weight of the emulsion and has a mean droplet size of from 0.5 to 15 mu m. The emulsions are stabilized by the addition of from 0.05 to 0.5% by weight, based on the total emulsion, of a high molecular weight water-soluble homopolymer or copolymer of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylamide or methacrylamide.

    Abstract: Antifoam based on oil-in-water emulsions has an oil phase contg. (a) a 12-26C alcohol, distn. residues from the prodn. of higher alcohols by Oxo synthesis or the Ziegler process and opt. alkoxylated and/or (b) a fatty ester of 12-22C carboxylic acids with a mono- to trihydric 1-18C alcohol; and opt. (c) a hydrocarbon with b.pt. above 200 deg.C or 12-22C fatty acids. This comprises 5-50 (wt.)% of the emulsion and has an average particle size of under 25 microns. The novelty is that 5-50% of components (a) and (b) in the oil phase are replaced by (d) at least one cpd. with m.pt. above 70 deg.C, consisting of fatty alcohols (I) with min. 28C, esters (II) of 1-22C carboxylic acids with (I), adducts of 2-4C alkylene oxides with (I), polyethylene waxes (III) with mol.wt. min. 2000, carnauba wax (IV) and/or montan ester waxes (VA) and montan acid waxes (VB) and their salts (VC).
