Abstract: Thiophene-2-carboxylic acid derivatives of the general formula I I where R1 to R3 are each hydrogen, halogen, branched or straight-chain C1-C6-alkyl, C1-C8-alkoxy, C1-C6-haloalkyl, C1-C6-haloalkoxy, nitro, cyano, unsubstituted phenyl or phenyl which is mono- to trisubstituted by C1-C4-alkyl, halogen, C1-C5-haloalkyl, C1-C4-alkoxy or C1-C5-haloalkoxy; X is -OR4 or -NH-OR5, R4 being branched or straight-chain C3-C10-alkynylalkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen; and R5 being branched or straight-chain C1-C5-alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, or branched or straight-chain C3-C10-alkynylalkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen; with the proviso that R4 is not propargyl when R2 and R3 are both hydrogen or when R2 is halogen or R3 is chlorine, methyl or methoxy. The compounds I are suitable for combating the growth of unwanted plants.
