    Abstract: a :b -Dichloropropionic acid esters (e.g. of saturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic alcohols) are produced by treating acrylic acid esters with chlorine in the gas phase in the presence of a minor amount (preferably 0.1 to 5 per cent by weight of the amount of acrylic acid ester) of an N-substituted carboxylic acid amide or a primary, secondary or tertiary amine of the aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic series, or a mixture of these compounds. The amide or amine preferably has a boiling-point close to that of the acrylic acid ester, whereby the two compounds can be vaporized together, and there is preferably also present a polymerization retarder. A suitable amount of chlorine is 0.9-1.5 mols. per mol. of ester, and the preferred reaction temperatures lie in the range 80-200 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of the methyl ester in the presence of hydroquinone and (1) methylpyrrolidone; (2) N:N-diethylformamide; (3) N:N-dimethylformamide; (4) dimethylamine; (5) diethylamine; (6) n-butylamine; (7) triethylamine; (8) monomethylformamide; (9) N:N-dibutylformamide; and (10) 2-ethylhexylamine-(1). Additional amides and amines are listed.
