Abstract: The membranes comprise synthetic polymers which have liquid-crystalline phases and whose mesogenic groups are bonded in the chain of the polymer or as side chain to the polymer. By comparison with polymer membranes which contain liquid-crystalline, low-molecular-weight compounds, the membranes of the invention comprise a one-phase system whose composition remains constant. A further advantage is that the liquid-crystalline phases can be aligned, giving improved permeability.
