Abstract: 1,247,796. Expanded styrene polymers made using ammonium sulphate. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 21 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 9476/69. Headings C3C and C3P. Expanded styrene polymers are made by carrying out the expansion in the presence of 0À0001-1% by wt. of ammonium sulphate as a nucleating agent. In the examples (1, 2 and 11) polystyrene or styrene/α-methylstyrene copolymer granules are either melted in an extruder or powdered in a mixer and then blended with ammonium sulphate and pentane; the foamable granules are then expanded with steam; and in Example 12 styrene is polymerized in an aq. mixture of polyvinyl pyrrolidone, ammonium sulphate, sodium pyrophosphate, pentane, dibenzoyl peroxide and polystyrene to form foamable beads which are then expanded with steam. In comparative examples (3-10) ammonium bromide or oxalate, water, sodium sulphite, aluminium or sodium hydrogen sulphate, α-alanine and diammonium citrate are used as nucleating agents.
