Abstract: Aq. dispersions (I), obtainable by specified stepwise emulsion polymerisation in aq. phase using an emulsifier, are claimed. The steps comprise (A) polymerisation, in 1 or more stages, of comonomer mixt. comprising (1a) 1-50% (all pts. wt.) 1 or more mono-olefinic monomer (Monomers I) which (a) contain at least 1 OH gp. in mol. (Monomers Ia) or (b) contain functional gps. convertible into hydrophilic gps. through selective chemical conversion (Monomers Ib) or (c) are N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylcaprolactam, oligomer or polymer of these, or of formula (1) or (2) (Monomers (Ic). (2a) 40-99% 1 or more non-hydrophilic mono-olefinically unsatd. monomers (Monomers II) different from Monomers Ia, Ib and Ic, and (3a) 0-20% 1 or more polyolefinically unsatd. monomers (Monomers III) to form seed polymer. (B) polymerisation in 1 or more stages of monomer mixt. different from comonomre mixt. in (A), comprising (1b) 0-10 % 1 or more Monomers I (2b) 40-99% 1 or more Monomers II (3b) 1-50 % 1 or more Monomers III (4b) 0-10% 1 or more monomers with acid gps. (Monomers IV) in presence of seed polymer from (A) until average particle size 300-3000 nm is obtd.. In formulae (1) and (2) R1 = H or Me; R2 = H or 1-6C alkyl; R3 = 1-6C alkyl, aryl, or -C(O)-R4, where R4 = 1-6C alkyl, or aryl; n = 1 or 2; n = 1-150. Opt., when Monomer Ib has been used, prepn. also comprises (C) swelling particles obtd. by (A) and (B) through converting gps. introduced by means of Monomer Ib through selective chemical conversion into corresp. hydrophilic gps. at temp. above glass transition temp. of polymer of step (A). USE/ADVANTAGE - Aq. colour coating compsns., in industrial applications such as paper coating where they serve as part of binder, replacement of opacifying pigments such as TiO2 and clay in, e.g., phenoplast and aminoplast formulations, partic. contg. urea-HCHO or melamine-HCHO condensation prods., and water-dispersible alkyd resins. (I) are obtd. in more reproducible manner. Films have high opacity. Process avoids incompatibility through polymers of stage (A) and stage (B). (0/0)

Abstract: Flat laminated laser-optical recording material has an amorphous, thermally-modifiable, electroconductive recording layer, which contains dyestuff (I) and polymer (II) bound to one another through ionic bonds. (I) is anionic, pref. with carboxylate, phosphonate, O-phosphate, O-sulphate or sulphonate gps., esp. a phthalocyanine, porphin, tetraazaporphin, hemiporphyrazine or tetrathiolato metal complex deriv.. Abstract: Aq. dispersion of opaque, hollow+free particles of dia. 0.07-4.7 microns are obtd. by an at least two-stage emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsatd. monomers so as to give water-dispersible core-shell polymer particles, the process comprising (a) a first stage in which the cores are obtd. by emulsion polymerisation of a carboxyl gp.-free ethylenically unsatd. monomer in presence of 5-70 wt.% (based on monomer wt.) of non-polymerisable cpds. (I) which contain acid gps. and which show an liq. aggregated state at below +40 deg.C; and (b) a second and opt. further stages in which shells of a polymer with Tg above 50 deg.C are formed on the cores such that the ratio of the wt. of the cores formed in stage (a) to the total wt. of the particles is 1:4-150. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use of the dispersions is claimed in coating materials, the particles, although being free of holes, being suitable for at least partially replacing inorg. pigments in paints. This process for producing opaque particles is simpler than that of EP-342944, the addn. of a base and heating to above the Tg not being necessary on account of the use of (I) in stage (2).
