Abstract: The urea is cyclised using a halogen or sulphuryl halide and the crude product is dissolved in aqueous acid. At pH 2.6 - 3.4 and 40-85 degrees C impurities crystallise out and are separated. Gasification of the acid solution gives crystalline benzthiazole of high purity suitable for use in the manufacture of polyacrylonitrile dyes.
