    Abstract: 1496437 1,4-Butynediol BASF AG 2 May 1975 [3 May 1974] 18369/75 Heading C2C Butynediol is made by reacting acetylene with aqueous formaldehyde solution in the presence of a copper acetylide containing catalyst which is contained in a reaction chamber and which is in the form of a suspension or a fixed bed, the reaction being effected at atmospheric pressure or above with the avoidance of a coherent gas phase in the reaction chamber, the latter being such that it can be filled completely with liquid, the fresh acetylene being fed to the reaction chamber dissolved in the aqueous formaldehyde solution. The reaction may be operated at a pressure of, for example, 1À5-25 bars, the partial pressure of acetylene being kept below the reaction pressure. Suitable apparatus is described.
