    Abstract: Paper size is based on finely-divided aq. dispersions of copolymers (I) obtd. by emulsion copolymerisation of ethylenically unsatd. monomers in the presence of starch. 40-140 (wt.) pts. monomer mixt. of 20-65% (a) (meth)acrylonitrile, (b) 80-35% 3-8C alkyl acrylate and (c) 0-10% other ethylenically unsatd. comonomers are copolymerised in 100 pts. aq. soln. of 2.7-15% degraded starch, with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.04 to under 0.12 dl/g. at 40-100 deg.C in the presence of a peroxide initiator. The monomer mixt. pref. contains (a) acrylonitrile, (b) butyl acrylate(s) and opt. (c) di-1-3C-alkylamino-2-6C-alkyl (meth)acrylate, N-vinylimidazoline and/or N-vinyl-2 methylimidazoline or their quaternisation prods., or styrene, (meth)acrylamide, methacrylate esters and acrylate esters other than those used as (b). The starch is modified by enzymatic and then oxidative degradation to a viscosity of 0.045-0.11 dl/g.
