    Abstract: The invention comprises dyes of the formula: wherein Y is amino, arylamino, or hydroxy, R is alkyl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl, and n is 1 or 2. They are made by esterification of the corresponding acids, or of acids which contain in 1,4-positions nitro groups or halogen atoms followed by replacement of such by amino. To esterify, the acid chlorides may be heated with excess alcohol, or the acids themselves may be heated with the sulphuric esters of the alcohols. The products dye polyesters, nylon, polyurethanes, and cellulose esters and ethers blue or violet shades. In examples: (1) 1-amino - 4 - nitroanthraquinone - 2 - carboxylic acid chloride is boiled with excess cyclohexanol, isobutyl alcohol, or ethanol, followed by reduction with stannous chloride or sodium hyposulphite; (2) 1-amino-4-bromanthraquin-one-2-carboxylic acid chloride is heated with cyclohexanol, and the bromine is replaced by amino using p-toluenesulphonamide in the usual way, or with ethanol, followed by condensation with aniline to replace the bromine; (3) 1,4 - dichloranthraquinone - 5 - or - 6 - carboxylic acid chloride is boiled with ethanol, followed by replacement of both chlorine atoms with amino, using p-toluenesulphonamide in the usual way; (4) 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone-2,4-dicarboxylic acid and 1-amino-4-hydroxy-anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid are each heated with methylsulphuric acid. Other alcohols specified are methanol isopropanol, hexanol, octanol, dimethyl cyclohexanol, benzyl alcohol, phenyl ethyl alcohol.
